A taste for adventure. This year, we’re celebrating Scottish whisky festivals differently by shining a spotlight on the unexpected. Our events and our whiskies are all about embracing the spirit of adventure and exploration. Get ready to join us on the path less trodden and for whisky experiences with a taste for adventure.
Expect the unexpected. Festival season is a time where distilleries pay homage to their region and celebrate their distinctive character. But this year, the Society has chosen to do things a little differently. Our Whisky Wanderers bottlings might surprise you, as Duncan Gorman writes, so join us as we walk the path less trodden.
Casks of curiosity. It’s generally easy to break with convention, but it takes skill to do it tastefully. The Society has been an incubator for ideas and out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to whisky creation for some time now. It encourages us to take our taste buds into uncharted territories and discover the range of weird and wonderful flavours our beloved drink has to offer. Join Julien Willems as he retraces some of the most unusual casks and flavours the SMWS has had to offer.
Further adventures in whisky. We hope to have inspired you over the years to take your whisky adventures to the next level. If you’re looking for any ideas, let’s cast our mind back to when Unfiltered took us well and truly off the beaten track
Mischievous malts. We’ve come a long way since the first clear glass bottle, Exotic Cargo, appeared on our shelves in 2017. Defying conventions and sparking a lively debate, the Society’s first ‘Heresy’ small-batch release was somewhat of a bold move. A blended malt from the Society? That was bound to ruffle a few feathers. Now with 30 releases, these experimental drams are a popular choice in the Society’s offerings. ‘Heresy’ is a whisky journey that proves sometimes it’s worth choosing path less trodden, as Julien Willems writes.
12 ways to fire the senses. We love high-octane outdoor adventures, but sometimes you’re looking to take things at a slower pace and there’s no reason why one excludes the other! Mads Schmoll has 12 ideas for the season ahead to help you get off the beaten track, albeit in a more leisurely fashion.
Under the radar. This farm distillery in Ayrshire has quietly started producing whisky and lured John Campbell away from Laphroaig in Islay in the process. Unfiltered editor Richard Goslan paid a visit to find out more about the distillery’s ambitions in this feature from Issue 68 of Unfiltered back in April 2022.
