A PAIRING WITH PAWS
Blind ambition
There’s always a buzz around our Members’ Rooms before a tasting. But tonight, the atmosphere is positively giddy while members wait for the special guests and their speakers to arrive. We’re here for an evening with Guide Dogs Scotland which will see Society ambassadors Lucy and Liam selecting whiskies to match the personality of each dog.
SMWS INSIDER
Nick Fulton
There are many weird and wonderful aspects to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, but flavour is what lies at its very core. This is something the Society’s new group head chef, Nick Fulton, has happily embraced while crafting bespoke new menus for our Members’ Rooms. Using a whisky-first approach, Nick’s extensive experience has taken the Society’s dining to new heights, as Duncan Gorman writes.
SMWS VENUES
A taste of character
The Society’s new group head chef, Nick Fulton brings a unique and exciting perspective to whisky and food with bespoke menus for each Society venue – here’s a glimpse of some of the flavour adventures in store for members.
DISTILLERY PROFILE: TORMORE
The return
Despite being built in 1959, Tormore distillery was one of the first new distilleries of the 20th century. Recently acquired by Elixir Distillers in 2022, the Speyside distillery is in many ways returning to its roots. Having lived there as a small boy, it’s a site that the Society’s head of the whisky creation, Euan Campbell, is familiar with. In March he returned to his childhood home ahead of the release of Tormore’s first expression in this new era.
SMWS ADVENTURES
The whisky tourist
It’s always great to see our members embody what The Scotch Malt Whisk Society is all about. Having an open mind, taking the path less trodden, and opting for a maverick approach to life are all very important to us here at the Society. But for BBC Radio DJ and Society member, Vic Galloway, a sense for adventure comes above all else, as Duncan Gorman writes.
LOCAL FLAVOUR
Spirit of the Spey
In the first of our Whisky Wanderers off the beaten track experiences Mads Schmoll heads to Speyside with Dufftown local and resident forager, Michelle Myron. Whisky touches everything in this landscape, whether it’s stories from the past, local goings-on in the present or even its visible chemical impact on the local flora. Together, they confirm one thing – you don’t even need to step inside a distillery to have a whisky experience in Speyside.
SMWS PARTNER BAR
The Malt Room
Believe it or not the capital of the Scottish Highlands went without having its own whisky bar for a very long time. That was until 2017 when The Malt Room opened its doors on Church Street in Inverness. This cosy watering hole offers whisky fans the chance to explore the tantalising flavours that single cask, cask strength whisky has to offer, and makes for a well fitted Society partner bar, as Duncan Gorman explains.
