SMALL-BATCH DELIGHTS \u2013 SHIMMERING SILK:<\/strong> Just in time to celebrate St Patrick\u2019s Day, the SMWS is releasing an Irish whiskey created in collaboration with the team at Dunville\u2019s Irish Whiskey. The Society\u2019s Julien Willems<\/strong> has more on how Shimmering Silk<\/em> came about, and why it\u2019s one to savour \u2013 whatever the time of year.<\/p>\n

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN\u2019S DAY:<\/strong> For International Women\u2019s Day this year, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is marking the occasion with the special release of a range of bottlings sampled and selected by an all-female Tasting Panel. We\u2019re also celebrating Our Whisky Foundation\u2019s mentorship programme to support women working in the whisky industry \u2013 including the Society\u2019s very own brand innovation manager Julie Roberts<\/strong>. Here, Julie explains how the programme works and how it has benefited her.<\/p>\n

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN\u2019S DAY BOTTLINGS:<\/strong> Join Mhairi Mitchell<\/strong> as she explores this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day bottle releases. Delve into a collection of exceptional bottles, curated by an all-female Tasting Panel to celebrate the expertise of women in the whisky industry.<\/p>\n

DISTILLERY PROFILE \u2013<\/strong> WESTLAND: <\/strong>Our recent flurry of casks from American distilleries is continuing at pace. For our next instalment, SMWS ambassador Lee \u2018Connas\u2019 Connor<\/strong> had a chat with Westland\u2019s Ana Hinz and Tyler Pederson to find out what they\u2019re bringing to the whiskey scene in Washington State and what\u2019s in store for Society members.<\/p>\n

FLAVOUR FOCUS<\/strong> \u2013 MASHING: <\/strong>At its most basic, the process of mashing involves mixing ground malt \u2013 known as grist \u2013 with hot water to convert the starch within the grain into fermentable sugars. The end-product of mashing is called wort. Gavin D Smith<\/strong> explains what\u2019s going on during the mashing process, and how different approaches can influence a distillery\u2019s spirit character.<\/p>\n

Having soaked up inspiration and knowledge during his time managing our Greville Street Members\u2019 Room in London, Sam MacDonald<\/strong> has set his eyes on creating an equally passionate whisky community in Northern Ireland, as Duncan Gorman<\/strong> writes.<\/p>\n<\/div>
