2023 SMWS Year in Review: If life begins at 40, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is living, breathing proof that it’s a fantastically exciting age to hit – and this past year has shown that as we enter our fifth decade, we’re in ruder health than ever. Chief Exec Andrew Dane has our year in review to share with members.
Maverick moments – what lies ahead? Throughout our 40th anniversary year, Julien Willems has been reflecting on various aspects of our history of doing things differently and following our own path. Here, he takes the opportunity to look ahead to whatever maverick moments could be in store for members as we head towards our half century.
A Christmas reward to savour: The Society has a dram for every time of year – but when it comes to the festive season, we all need a little Old & Dignified dram in our lives. Julien Willems took a deep dive into this most precious of flavour profiles.
Winter whisky wonderland: Struggling to find the perfect seasonal gift or treat for yourself to cosy up with? The Society is here to help, with our specially sourced Winter Series – with something for everyone to see us through the dark nights, as Duncan Gorman finds out.
Distillery profile – Yuza, Japan: The small-scale distillery of Yuza in northern Japan is taking its expertise in distilling shochu to focus on crafting a one-of-a-kind whisky, which is traditionally Japanese and where attention to detail and craftsmanship is at the heart of production.
Edinburgh’s liquid history: The Edinburgh New Town residence of 10 Scotland Street has been home to booksellers, silk merchants, sailors, preachers, politicians and more since it was first inhabited in the early 19th century. As the home of Pip and Leslie Hills, it also played a key role in the formation of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Now, Leslie Hills has written a history of the house over the course of two centuries, including an intriguing connection with The Vaults in Leith.
SMWS bottles – What’s in a name? The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has always taken pleasure in our inventive bottle names. But where does the Tasting Panel’s inspiration come from? SMWS Australia ambassador Alex Moores searched through the archives to find out – from cinema to song, science fiction and beyond…
SMWS app: Over the last year we’ve been working hard to bring you our brand new SMWS app, which is coming soon to SMWS members in the UK. Mads Schmoll put it to the test.
